Thank you For Smoking title sequence analysis:

Information, Theme, Character, Location, Narrative.

The theme of the film looks as if it to be a happy/comedy movie. This is picked up from the first few seconds of the title opening sequence as the narrator talks over a upbeat country music. We dont get to see the charcter in the title opening sequence but how ever the the narator makes some refernce towards him claiming that if he met him he would strangle and kill him. This clearly indicates to us the character maybe unpopular but then again could be cocky and arrogant. Throughout the sequence the narrator igarettes manufactored.Recites a poem relating to cigarretts and the creators of it. We do not get a specific location as throughout the title opening sequence animations are used to show all the different types of cigarette.

Genre

The genre of the film is comedy-drama. Comedy-drama, sometimes contracted to dramedy, is a genre of television, theatre, and film in which there is an equal or nearly equal balance of humor and serious content. Attributes of comedy-dramas on TV are:
  • There is often an absence of a pre-recorded laugh track.
  • Storylines tend to be more serialized, with events taking place in earlier episodes being referred back to or having an effect in later episodes, as opposed to more traditional sitcoms which focus on telling one standalone story every week.
  • Continuity of character and storylines are more relevant than in traditional sitcoms.
  • Can be either half-hour or hour long episodes. However, shows which use a 30 minute format tend to be more comedic with dramatic elements that keep storylines going forward, while shows which use a 60 minute format tend to be more dramatically based with humour used throughout the show as either comic relief or to punctuate certain scenes.
  • Characters' backstories tend to have a greater overall effect on stories. Often something a character has done in the past will catch up with him or her, as opposed to more traditional sitcoms where a character's backstory is unlikely to be referenced by the story of the week
  •
Camera Work

  • Close up
In this title opening sequence its mainly animation productions. However through the animation close ups are used to show the audince different things to get different meanings. For example throughout the animation close ups are used to show the different types of cigarette  manufactored around our world today. This is likely to be fimalilar with the audince as some may already be smokers and are aware of these brands. It also triggers the audince to automatically thinking the film is likely to have or be about cigarette . Close ups are also used to show the credits, for example to show the actors/characters involved with the film and also the film makers. This is shown when the famous cigarette brands are shown but instead of the brand name on it, the writers or actors name is shown.

 props,  colour,  Font Type

As the whole title opening sequence is animated, no props were used. However the font type is mainly bold to make a clear statement of the credits. This attracts the audience to see the name thats being displayed.

All the colours that were used throughout the opening were mainly bright colours. Bright colours often symbolise happiness, fun, laughter but on the other hand when the colour red is used on igarette  packets it can symbolise death, blood, and illness which the film may have refrence to.

Sound and Editing

The sound provided for the title opening sequence is by tex williams called smoke smoke smoke that cigarette. It has the country music feel to it which may influence the audince to thinking that the film may have some country side reference to it. The name and meaning behind the song straight away rings an alarm bell for the audience members that it also has smoking refernce due to the chrous repeating the line "Smoke smoke smoke smoke that cigarette". The editing of the sequence is perfected smoothly. It almost pushes on clip to the side and then next clip above but it makes the video transition smooth in order for it to make sense and come out smooth.
